Safety

In Churchill Falls, people do everything they can to make sure others in their community are safe. It's not unusual to see residents shovelling snow for an elderly neighbour, holding a ladder for a friend, or encouraging a child to wear a helmet while playing hockey. This attention to safety continues at work.

Workers at Nalcor Energy - Churchill Falls look out for their own safety as well as the safety of their colleagues. Safety is a number one priority. They follow the credo: We owe it to ourselves and our family to make it home safely every day. They are challenged to answer the question: What have we done today so that nobody gets hurt?

Churchill Falls employees are committed to continuously improving safety, regardless of whether they are a manager or union member. They take every measure to provide a safe work environment, and strive for zero workplace injuries.

Employees have initiated a number of programs to help them reach safety objectives. For example, the Safe Work Observation Program (SWOP) is focused on reporting, investigating and communicating safety issues. The program analyzes trends and determines lessons learned. In addition, the safety steward program guarantees every shop has a steward who provides communication and assistance to employees regarding safety.

Committees are also in place to foster safety at work. The occupational health and safety committee does regular inspections and assists in incident investigations. A joint safety leaders' committee, comprised of union and management, looks at higher level safety issues and puts corrective actions in place.

A safety training officer ensures all employees have the necessary training they need to perform their jobs with safety and skill. On-site orientation is provided to every employee and contractor. As well, selected staff has been trained to assist in all emergencies such as medical, fire, and confined space.

Contractors are expected to be at the same level of training as employees and follow the appropriate policies and procedures. Safety must be the number one priority for all contractors.  Click here for more information on Nalcor Energy's Contractor Safety Management Program.
